High School drop out is a huge problem worldwide. The country with the lowest annual average rate of school dropout is Slovenia, with an average rate of 5.2%. The country with the highest school dropout rate in Malta, with 40.5%.
The average annual dropout rate was the highest for secondary schools in India, was about 17.06 percent in 2016, the highest in India. In India, the secondary level of education students is required to write a common examination set conducted by the government.
Talking to many high school students in India, the number one cause of dropouts is the ability to devote time, effort and look beyond the immediate plans to support their livelihood. Due to this short-sightedness, parents or kids feel there is an easy way to earn a small amount of money to meet their ends meet and drop out of high school to engage in some means to earn a livelihood. We found that academic failure and keeping up with the classes is another challenge, and kids choose the easy path. Another common phenomenon seen in most villages is that there is nobody to mentor or guide as their immediate families may not have a proper educational background to see through and educate the benefits of a good education.
Here are some proven methods to help reduce high school dropouts.
- Inspire kids with success stories of those who got educated and how comfortable life they are leading.
- Spread the awareness of education and benefits in the community
- Help students in their difficulties facing high school education. Pair them up with like-minded students who can help in their coursework
- Provide career guidance options and show the fruits of the labor after their graduation
- Educating parents is as much important as educating kids on the long term benefits of having a proper education.
- Daily Attendance at school is key to keep kids engaged with school activities, whether it is academic classes, sports, or other extracurricular activities.
- Wherever possible, use technology to engage students and connect them with like-minded people. Use library facilities to the best advantage.
For these reasons, the CPR Foundation was formed to mentor high school students to guide the mentees during their career journey. Our goal is to educate the students whose families may not have educational backgrounds and show the different career options in society and steer them towards their passion.
